Quick summary

So I just noticed that a follow-up reply moved its association from the appropriate post to one of my pages that has comments turned off.

I made a post. Two different users replied to the post. Said replies appeared in the comments section of WP and also on the WP site itself, and they can be seen via Mastodon instances as well.

I replied to both via the "Reply" option on the comments list page and both my comments appeared on the list, on the WP post, and are also seen connected to the first two replies on the mastodon servers.

One of the users replied again but this time it showed that the reply was on one of my pages rather than the original post when looking at the comments list. If I go to the WP post and the mastodon servers it doesn't show the second reply. I replied as well but my reply isn't showing on the WP post or on the mastodon servers either.

If I go to the page it shows that the comments (the follow-up reply and my thank you) are there instead of on the actual post.

I noticed this happened once before but I thought it was related to the Friends plugin which I don't have installed any longer.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Reply to a comment via the comment list page in WP.
  2. When the other user replies back to your reply it seems to lose its content association.

Can you maybe link an example?

Sorry for any inconvenience. I just created a dummy post and was able to recreate the behavior using a non-WP account as the original post probably falls under "volatile topics."

https://madmolelabs.com/2025/testing-post/

  1. I posted from WP.
  2. Replied via my mas.to account.
  3. Approved the reply in the comments section in the WP-Admin.
  4. Replied via the comments section in the WP-Admin

Steps 1 - 4 show the replies "In Response to" the "Testing Post" post.

  1. I replied to the reply from step 4 with my mas.to account.
  2. The reply appears in the comments section in the WP-Admin but now says "In Response to" the "About" page.
